NVH Testing Facilities

ACS is the single source for the design and construction of Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) testing facilities that allow manufacturers to obtain quality data for new product development, certification, and end-of-line production testing. We are experts in NVH standards and codes with a unique ability to translate them into facility design requirements. We can provide integrated facility solutions for NVH testing using our knowledge and understanding. It begins with our team working to fully understand our clients’ products, associated regulations, and testing techniques.

Anechoic, Quiet, and Reverberation Rooms

ACS engineers collaborate with you to specify requirements for materials and equipment for noise and vibration testing applications, including:

  • Anechoic and semi-anechoic room specification: ACS will work with you to develop background noise level, frequency range of interest, and vibration isolation requirements. We will determine recommended room dimensions, wall construction types, HVAC design and interface methods, and cable interface approaches from these testing requirements.
  • Quiet room specification: ACS will work with you to understand your NVH test requirements and develop the proper stable ambient working environment. Unlike a certified acoustic test space, a quiet room allows for repeatable acoustic measurements allowing for product development activities. ACS will recommend room layouts, acoustic treatments and vibration isolation deemed necessary, and how to tie into the balance of the facility for data measurement and analysis.
  • Reverberation room specification: ACS will work with you to develop background noise level, frequency range of interest, and vibration isolation requirements. We utilize these requirements in sizing the reverberation room to have ample modal density to generate the energy required for a diffuse noise field. Additionally, wall construction, surface finish, HVAC design and interface, and cable interfaces are specified.

Beyond NVH Testing: A Holistic Approach to Acoustic Sensitivity

Beyond NVH testing, recognizing acoustically sensitive areas within a facility, such as offices, conference rooms, and operator control rooms, ACS implements targeted mitigation measures based on our understanding of noise and vibration transfer paths. In the absence of specific design criteria, ACS leverages past project experience to recommend optimal requirements for your design.

NVH Equipment Integration

Our engineers and technicians have a wide range of experience integrating NVH test equipment into anechoic and reverberation chambers, including:

  • Coordination of transmission loss openings between reverberant rooms and semi-anechoic rooms.
  • Engine dynamometer integration within anechoic and semi-anechoic spaces.
  • Vehicle dynamometer integration within semi-anechoic spaces.
  • Implementation of a vertical reflecting plane for white goods product testing in a semi-anechoic space.
  • Integration and incorporation of overhead material handling equipment within the anechoic and semi-anechoic test space.

Tackling Compliance with Experience and Expertise

ACS has designed and developed NVH test solutions that address and future-proof for NVH standards, requirements, and codes, including:

  • Sound power: Understanding internationally recognized test standards such as ISO3744, ISO 3745, and ISO 26101 in conjunction with client-driven measurement standards.
  • Sound absorption: Comprehending American and International testing standards like ISO 354 and ASTM 423 in conjunction with unique client-driven measurement standards.
  • Household appliance: Navigating testing requirements outlined within IEC 60704 standards for household and similar electrical appliances through project-specific experience.
  • Automotive: Applying vast experience in interpreting and designing automotive applications driven by ANSI, ASTM, ISO, and SAE standards related to testing facility design.
